ScottOpus Productions is pleased to introduce a CD of festive and ceremonial music.

Brandy Butter, Brass and Bells

This latest CD explores the MIDI realization of various musical environments and pitch organizations. Some of the works contained on this CD, are based on Baroque and tonal formats while others explore the serial technique. Some works are MIDI reworks of early compositions although in most cases extensive rearrangements have been made.

TRACK 1.2.3.4. - COMPILATIONS, ARRANGEMENTS AND REALIZATIONS

(It should be noted that the four following Tracks are arranged and realized by Kerry R. Scott with harmonizations, descants and rhythmical variations by the composer and in the case of O! Come All Ye Faithful by the composer and David Willcocks.)

TRACK 1. - TRUMPET VOLUNTARY

This composition was originally attributed to Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695) but now it is generally accepted that this composition was in fact written by Jerimiah Clarke (1673 - 1707) and titled "The Prince of Denmark's March" This arrangement of the work is for an "English Brass Band" The score is available from the arranger - by Email to the following address kerryscott@scottopus.org.The original was written for organ. In this arrangement three descants by the composer have been added and significant changes have been made in the harmonizations. It should be noted that all ornamentation has been omitted as the arranger believes that ornamentation is more appropriate when rendering the melody within a Baroque context and inappropriate when new/contemporary harmonizations or instrumentations are used. For this recording certain liberties have been taken with the "English Brass Band" format but these are not included in the printed version of the score.

A Complete MP3 recording of this work is available from this site. The complete work will take sometime to download and is about 4 megabytes in size. Please click on the picture to begin the download.

TRACK 2. - SUITE OF FESTIVE FANFARES

- I - Tricinium/Polonaise -- anon.

The original score of this short composition was for three Natural Trumpets. The composer has arranged this work for three Trumpets, Three French Horns and Timpani and placed this group within the "English Brass Band" context as two antiphonal groups -- Horns on one side, Trumpets on the other with the Timpani in the middle. The English Brass Band Full Score and Parts are available from the composer (see ordering instructions under Trumpet Voluntary - above) -- In the score the Horn parts are for the E Flat Alto Horn and the Trumpets parts are re-scored for B flat Cornets.

- II - Quatricinium/Allegro -- anon.

As indicated by the title the original score of this short composition was for four Natural Trumpets. The composer has arranged this work for four Trumpets, four French Horns and two Snare Drums of differing timbre. As with the preceding composition the composer has placed this group within the "English Brass Band" context as two antiphonal groups -- two Trumpets, two Horns and one Snare Drum on one side, the complementing group on the other.

- III - Choral - "Aus meines Herzens Grunde." Morgensegen. - J. E. Altenberg(1734 - 1801)

The original instrumentation for this work was for four Natural Trumpets with ranges as indicated by the following titles -- Clarino Trumpet I in D, Clarino Trumpets II and III in D - con sordino (Muted) and Trompete Principal. The work has been arranged for two antiphonal groups of three Horns and three Trumpets and Timpani. As with the previous two compositions the composer has placed the antiphonal groups within the "English Brass Band" context.

- IV - Zwei Fanfaren fur Signaltrompeten und Kesselpauken -- anon.

As can be surmised from the title this work was originally scored for Trumpets and Timpani. The three Trumpets called for in this score are however, "Singnaltrompeten" rather than the "Clarino" or "Natural" Trumpets called for in the previous scores. "Signaltrompeten" are more like Bugles than Trumpets -- their range is lower and sound more brash. This arrangement of the work keeps the original instrumentation but replaces the "Signaltrompeten" with Cornets.

- V - Christmas Fanfare No. 1 -- Kerry R. Scott (1949 - ).

The first few bars of this Fanfare are used as an introduction to the complete suite. This introduction and, in fact, the whole fanfare is scored for the complete band and not the limited early baroque instrumentation that is used in the previous movements. The work was written in the early 1970's but unlike the Christmas Fanfare No. 2 (seen later on the disk as part of Fantasia of Festive and Ceremonial Carols), also written in the early 1970's, this Fanfare was never performed. The final choral of this work was written in the fall of 2003 and appears as a finale for the suite.

TRACK 5.6.7.8. - COMPOSITIONS, AND REALIZATIONS

TRACK 5. - SUITE OF BAROQUE TRUMPET TUNES

Although an original composition this work makes use of conventions, harmonizations, playing styles and melodic structures that were prevelant during the baroque period. In particular the trumpet writing is stylistic of the time and conforms to the melodic and note constraints of the instruments of the time. Some slight adjustment needed to be made to the score in order for it to be realized via the MIDI system. Score and parts are available from the composer.

- I - Polonaise
- II - Intrada/Polonaise
- III - The Call To The Hunt/Polonaise
- IV - A Trumpet Tune

The work featured the Baritone Horn. The edition contained on this disk is reworked to feature the Bass Clarinet and utilizes a large Woodwind ensemble as well as a number of Brass instruments including French Horns and Trombones. It is Atonal in nature utilizing a combinatorial serial row of notes as well as the Baroque Fugue form.

TRACK 7. - FANTASIA AND FUGUE FOR PIANO AND STRINGS

The original version of this composition was scored for Piano Solo and written for, and dedicated to Jeanne Farewell. Ms. Farewell performed the work on a number of occasions but particularly on 02/03/1979 at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven Connecticut, on 11/09/1980 at The English Speaking Union, New York, New York and on 05/09/1981 at the Wigmore Hall, Wigmore Street,London, England. The work uses two combinatorial serial rows, the fantasia concept and the Fugue form. For the arrangement that is on this disk the composer has revised the composition for Piano and Strings and it has been slightly adjusted to accommodate MIDI realization. The composer is indeed indebted to Ms. Farewell for her insightful and sensitive performance of this technically challenging composition.
