A Mythography.
Fable I
An Intervention of Creation.
Fable Alpha
Once upon a time there was a Mystical Existence. This Mystical Existence created a most basic
or primitive form of life and, in addition, provided for it an evolutionary
procedure. Many years went by and the Mystical
Existence passively viewed the evolutionary procedure go to work on the
basic Life Form. Eventually the Life Form in one environment developed a
primitive reactive and responsive approach to survival as well as a burgeoning
ability to reason and think in a rational and objective way.
The Mystical Existence allowed this special Life Form to be called Humankind.
The Mystical Existence soon realized that it had created an
evolutionary schism. The very evolutionary system that the Mystical Existence had created to enhance and develop the Life Form was so successful that it now
threatened to destroy the very subject of its success. Humankind was in a state of distress. The two aspects of Humankind that made it special, the
presence of emotion and intellect – the ability to feel and the ability to
think – were in conflict.
The Mystical Existence decided that an Intervention was necessary.
The Mystical Existence contemplated the nature of the Intervention for a long time. It did not
want to obscure or dominate Humankind’s
independence and unilateral nature, nor did it want to allow one facet of Humankind’s dual development to become
dominant. Further the Mystical Existence realized that this was only a ‘glitch’
in the development system and perhaps, as time allowed further development to
take place, there would occur a natural dominance of one facet or the other. The
Mystical Existence also realized that
Humankind – as an intelligent life
form – would first question their origins and how they come into being.
With these realizations in place
the Mystical Existence spent more
time in contemplation of the nature of its’ Intervention.
The Intervention must accomplish number of things: Firstly it must help to
allow Humankind to resolve its dual
approach to survival – allowing one or other of its operating principals to
function when appropriate. Secondly, it must allow and, perhaps, further the
evolution of Humankind to continue
without hindrance. Lastly, and most importantly, it must enhance and allow Humankind to develop codes of behavior
that would allow the coexistence of Humankind
as well as protect them – one from another – and provide for survival.
The Mystical Existence realized that however hard the actual creation
of Humankind was, it was going to
pale into insignificance compared to the difficulty of preserving its’
creations safety.
After even more contemplation the
Mystical Existence finally determined
the format and content of the Intervention.
Purposely it did not make the solutions to the problems besetting Humankind easy or simple. The Mystical Existence was of the opinion
that the values of achievement and effort were relative. It was necessary that Humankind expend effort to accomplish
any facet of their survival that they found important or necessary; the greater
the effort the greater the achievement and the greater the feeling of
satisfaction.
It was this positive feeling of
satisfaction of accomplishment that the Mystical
Existence wanted to engender and emphasize in its’ Intervention. The Mystical
Existence realized that Humankind
could equally experience a positive feeling of accomplishment from efforts
associated with destruction as it could with construction. Part of the Intervention must therefore provide Humankind with the ability to make a
determination between destructive and constructive development. The Mystical Existence realized that, with
the existence of the evolutionary schism – already in place – the dichotomy of
feeling versus thinking was already extant within Humankind. The extension therefore of the thinking versus feeling
concept to that of destructive versus constructive aspects of Humankind’s
development was easily established and inevitably led to the creation o the
concept of right and wrong. The Intervention
must therefore allow Humankind to
become aware of the existence of the concept of morality.
The Mystical Existence then began to contemplate upon the format of the
Intervention; that is, how to make Humankind aware of, and respond to, the
guidelines it was going to provide via the Intervention.
Finally the Mystical Existence decided upon a Conglomerate Apothegm sententiously communicated to Humankind through myth and paradigm. The
Mystical Existence had noted that
its’ evolutionary procedure had let different groups of Humankind develop in different ways: in particular their skin
pigmentation and the physical aspect of various parts of their anatomy. Further
it seemed to the Mystical Existence
that these differences were in part relative to the environment that the
particular group of Humankind resided
within. The Mystical Existence also noted that in line with these physical
differences so cultural differences began to emerge.
It became clear to the Mystical Existence that the Conglomerate Apothegm must communicate
the concepts of morality in broad but definite ways, with application to a
number of cultural philosophies. It must emphasis the content o thee myth and
the symbol of the paradigm.
The Mystical Existence still was not confident of the shape and form of
the Intervention and paused again to
contemplate how best to achieve its’ intent. Again many years passed and the
evolutionary process continued to work its miracles on Humankind. As the years passed the Mystical Existence realized that Humankind must realize and find out phenomena for itself. The very
nature of Humankind, as established
by the evolutionary process, required it to be proud of its accomplishments and
understanding of natural occurrences, but also required it to make those
ventures into the unknown in an autonomous way, without help from the
supernatural. As with other discoveries, Humankind
must find and interpret the Intervention
for itself.
The Mystical Existence relaxed. It had been done! The Intervention was now in place. Seeds of
information and ideas had been sown in the minds of Humankind, and the Mystical
Existence knew that they would grow and develop. Some would not flourish
and some would become distorted in their growth, but the majority would become
healthy and propagate, thus allowing themselves to be students of the
evolutionary procedure itself.
The Mystical Existence smiled to itself. A paradox, this is what it had
provided for Humankind. The Paradox
of life – that which is right can be considered as wrong; that which is wrong
can be considered right: a never ending changing morality that Humankind scrambles ineffectively to
understand and control: A never ending effort to understand each other and
create compassion for one another. A struggle, inevitably incomplete, where the
effort is the reward and the continued development of Humankind is the prize.
The Mystical Existence smiled again, relaxes and waited for the time
when another Intervention would be
required.
