There are a number of points that any person contemplating asking a composer to compose a piece of music should take into account and contemplate before committing themselves.
1. The first point is to take into account the venue and reason or event the composition is designed for. For instance if the performance is for a wedding ceremony held in a church and is perhaps for the entrance of the Bride then this would perhaps require the use of an Organ plus some other series of instruments. Furthermore this determination also dictates the length of the composition and depending on the design of the ceremony and religious denominationn of the the church may determine the style of the composition.
2. There is no set order in which these decision should be made but they in essence encompass the following questions:-
a. What event is the composition to be designed for?
(Wedding Ceremony, Wedding Reception, Memorial Service,Anniversary Party, Birthday Party etc.)
b. Where is the composition to be performed?
(Church, Synagogue, Theater, Large Hall, Outside Picnic area, Gardens).
c. How long is the Composition to last?
(Commissions are written in three minute sections, a normal "Pop Song" last approximately three minutes while a processional lasts about two minutes -- a minute of music is longer than one thinks -- a fanfare of reasonable last about thirty seconds).
d. What instruments or voices is the composition to be written for?
(Ceremonial Instruments -- Trumpets--Organ, Dance Band, String Quartet, Solo Instrument, Piano, Choir, Individual Voice etc.)
e. What Musical Style is the composition to be written in?
(Baroque style, Ceremonial style, Dance style, Modern style, Classical style etc.)
The above points relate each to each other. Once one decision is made in many cases the others fall into place.
Generally it is necessary for an interested customer to have an telephone or E mail consultancy with the composer prior to setting up a commission contract -- this is a free offering from Mr. Scott. He can be contacted via E mail at kerryscott@scottopus.com.
