Sonata for Trumpet and Organ.

The Sonata for trumpet and Organ was written in 1993 and dedicated to the composer’s "good friend and fine trumpeter - Rick Pressley"; as inscribed on the title page of the score. The work was premiered by Richard Pressley on September 27th 1996 in Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle, Washington State as part of a benefit concert for the Seattle Conservatory of Music. In addition the last movement was also performed by Robert Nagel with the Carson City Chamber Orchestra in April 1993; with the Organ part rearranged for Strings by the composer. It was reported by both performers that the Sonata was well received.

The work itself is formed similar to the classical sonata in three movements with tempos of fast (allegro), slow (andante) and lastly fast (presto). It is also reminiscent of the Baroque sonatas of Fasch and Torrelli for the Clarino Style of playing the Natural Trumpet and Organ. This cannot be said, however, for the tonality evidenced in the movements which is modern and imaginative. There does seem, however, a hint of modal writing in the second movement. The Cadenza contained in the third movement is without doubt a fine piece of writing for the trumpet.

Any trumpeter attempting this work should be of a caliber sufficient to tackle the most advanced of the solo trumpet literature.
