Arizona Suite for Concert Band.

Originally written for Brass Quartet, the Arizona Suite was completed and rescored for Concert Band in 1991. The work is divided into three different movements and are described by the composer thusly:-

First Movement.

“ The first movement is from my memories of camping trips to the Mogollian Rim of Arizona, the huge plateau ending in a cliff overlooking southern Arizona.”

The composer goes on to detail the content of this movement indicating that the work starts out as early morning, sunrise and a “….brisk walk through the ponderosa pines to a rim overlook, stopping at Tom’s creek, resting by the creek on the grass, frisking small brook trout in the stream….” The movement ends with a representation of “….dusk and days end.”

Second Movement

“The second movement is from memories of seeking dark skies, away from the city, for telescopic viewing. My son and I often did this together, even once viewing the return of Halley’s comet from out in the a Arizona desert.”

The composer describes the second movement as follows – “Under the dark skies of Wickenburg with my telescope, surrounded by the strange Vulture mountains, peace and quiet, alone with the stars.”

Third Movement

The composer indicates that the third movement “… remembers the Phoenix summer heat…”

The movement features a traditional 12 bar blues form and does have words which are indicated below. In addition this movement features three soloists (“alto sax, trumpet and trombone”). The composer indicates that the atmosphere should be “relaxed and lazy – sounding like a New Orleans style street band.”

Blues for Phoenix Summer Heat
(Text)

Oh yes, my head it is a-splitin,
Lord, It's so damn hot outside.
Oh yes, my head it is a-splittin,
Lord it's so damn hot outside.

Well, if the air conditioning fails me,
then I may well lay down and die.

I'm stuck in heavy traffic,
I watch that red traffic light.
Yea, I'm stuck in heavy traffic,
I watch that red traffic light.

Well, if it doesn't change real soon now,
We'll all just melt down
Right out of sight.

I know, I know, it's Phoenix in the summertime.
Why can't I go,
Leave Phoenix in the summertime.
Such a pleasure not to be here,
But instead among the Flagstaff pines!

When your baby she's a-left you,
You feel so cold down inside.
When your baby she's a-left you,
You feel so cold down inside.

It may be in the triple digits,
But you still feel, so cold down inside.

Oh yes, she's off to seek her fortune,
The greener grass on the other side.
Oh yes, she's off to seek her fortune,
The greener grass on the other side.

Oh yes, that grass it looks much greener,
But remember, that it's hot outside!

I know, I know, it's Phoenix in the summertime.
Why can't I go,
Leave Phoenix in the summertime.
Such a pleasure not to be here,
But instead among the Flagstaff pines!
