Brass Rag and Aria.

Brass Rag and Aria are meant as two separate compositions and not movements of a two movement compostition. They are only included together on this web page as they were written as part of a series of compositions including Three Miniatures for Brass Quartet for the composer's brass quartet that he formed in the early 1980's.

Brass Rag.

A year after Three Miniatures for Brass Quartet was written, in 1981, Brass Rag was written. Brass Rag is again written for a brass quartet that according to the composer was that the composer had created. By the accounts of the composer the quartet enjoyed playing the work and therefore set it as part of their repertoire for concerts and other performances. Brass Rag is based on the Rags of Scott Joplin and performed many times in public performances and enjoyed by the public and performers alike.

Aria.

Aria is in complete contrast to the previous composition. It was written again for a Brass Quartet but a different quartet for which Brass Rag and Three Miniatures for Brass Quartet were written. Aria was written in Reno in 1985 and features the piccolo trumpet. It is interesting that the composer for this work chose a lyrical theme for the Piccolo trumpet rather than the more mellismatic writing that is more common for this instrument. Nevertheless the work is successful and, according to the composer enjoyed some significant success in performance. Mr. Lindner indicates that part of his intention in Aria was to experiment with "tonalities and modulations" but this does not in any way compromise the enjoyment of this lyrical compostition.
