Symphony No. 1 - SoundScapeS Of A Forgotten Britain
Kerry R. Scott (1949 - )
This latest CD is a realization of the first large scale Orchestral work of the composer. The work is orchestrated for an Orchestra with expanded woodwind and brass sections as well as a percussion section that includes two Antiphonal Tubular Bells players, Chromatic Timpani, Tuned Gongs and Tam-Tams as well as the normal array of pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments. In addition to these expanded forces, the composer includes significant solo and ensemble roles for Piano, Organ, Harpsichord, and Celeste. The String section is expanded to balance the woodwind, brass and percussion forces. The Work as a whole explores the SoundScapeS the composer experienced as a child and young person in Britain. The work is a combination of Combinatorial Rows and both Tonal and Modal pitch organization.
TRACK 1. - MOVEMENT I. -- Edinburgh - A Good, A Bad and An Ugly
This opening movement is as the title indicates -- A city of contrasts, both physically as well as culturally. The work opens with an atonal instrumental chorale with the ominous tolling of bells in the background. This soundscape moves into a more decadent form of the combinatorial row with "All People On Earth Do Dwell" as a back-drop.
TRACK 2. - MOVEMENT II -- London -- Dawn and Rush-Hour
This movement is scored for an expanded String Orchestra. It features two solo violins.
TRACK 3. - MOVEMENT III -- Cumbria -- A brooding Serenity and a Natural Power
The work is scored for full orchestra with added Piano and Organ. The work is meant to depict soundscapes of an England experienced by the composer as a child. This is perhaps a work in progress and it may appear as part of a larger work to be released at a later date.

TRACK 4. - MOVEMENT IV ---- The South Downs -- A Bastion of Orthodoxy Versus Liberal Progression.
This Movement, in classical extended Sonata Form, incorporates many of the motives and themes of the previous movements. It is meant to depict the sojourn we all take through life to balance the concepts of tradition with those of progress. While a fusion or consensus of ideals maybe advantageous, what has worked in the past should not be ignored.
