The work is a large scale complete musical setting by Kerry R. Scott of the Vernacular Catholic Mass form. It is a setting of the Votive Mass form "Mass in Thanksgiving".
The full title of Mass 2100 is "Mass 2100 -- A Contemporary Musical Setting of the Roman Catholic Votive Mass in Thanksgiving for Young People".
The work was conceived as a celebration (rather than a performance) of the Catholic Mass and thus needed to be celebrated by a Priest or a Priest and a Cantor. All parts, however small were to be set to music. This necessitated that the Priest celebrating the Mass was a singer of some reasonable facility.
The work is scored for large forces including Piano, Organ and Harpsichord as well as a Folk group, Large and Chamber Choir and Brass Ensemble.In addition there are solo roles for Flute, Violin, Clarinet and Timpani; with lesser parts for Double Bass, Electric Keyboard and Drum Sets.
Mass 2100 was written for the students and staff of the Convent of Our Lady, St Leonards-on-sea, East Sussex, UK. The work was first performed on Friday June 16th 1989 at 7:30 p.m. in the school chapel.
The forces outlined above were utilized in this performance and it is this performance that was recorded and included on the CD's MASS 2100. and ORCHESTRAL SUITE FROM MASS 21OO AND MASS 2100 ORIGINAL PERFORMANCE RECORDING as well as on ScottOpus Productions website as an MP3 file.
The CD MASS 2100. is an analog recording, recorded by the composer, of the premier performance of Mass 2100. The master tape was remixed by John Aitchison of Martlett Recording, Hastings, East Sussex UK. and was transfered to disc by ScottOpus Productions.
Although Mass 2100 was conceived as a celebration of the Mass, for logistical reasons the work was premiered as a performance, with a cantor taking the part of the priest. For that reason some small portions of the Mass are omitted on this recording as they are the particular portions that are only to be articulated by a Priest.
In performance any instrumentation can be used with any size choir. Further the musical setting of any section can be ommitted with that particular section being said rather than sung.
Unfortunately the Convent of Our Lady is now closed and the school has been demolished. The composer, therefore, offers Mass 2100 and this recording as a tribute to all those performers who made this recording and performance possible: and to those that made the Convent of Our Lady an educational "safe harbor"; thus facilitating so many to flourish and realize their potential to the fullest extent.
