TOPIC:- Pentecost

Pentecost commemorates the descending of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles fifty days after the The Resurrection of Christ. The celebration falls on Whitsunday -- thought to be so called because of the white garments worn by those that were baptized on that day. Whitsunday is a Christian Feast dating back to the first Century -- it is celebrated throughout the Christian world but with some significant denominational and geographical differences. For instance (and of particular importance to the music composition by Kerry R.Sott (see below)), in France Trumpets are sounded during the service to symbolize the "mighty wind" that accompanied the descent of the Holy Spirit. The vestment color is determined as red to symbolize the love of the Holy Spirit. In Italy, therefore, rose petals are scattered from the church ceilings, In Russia they carry flowers and in England special ales called Whitsun Ales were specially brewed to commemorate (and celebrate) the Feast. Even today Whitsun is considered a national holiday as well as the celebration of Pentecost, although the religious implication has somewhat dimmed.
Religous motives feature significantly throughout Kerry R. Scott's compositions and writings. With particular regard to Pentecost Mr. Scott wrote "A Prelude for Pentecost Sunday" This was first performed at St. Stephen's Church, Ridgefield Ct. on June 3rd. 1979.
