Trio For Bass Clarinet, Trumpet and Percussion was written in 1969.
The work was commissioned by Chris Runk - Bass Clarinet for his graduating recital at Oberlin Conservatory of Music Oberlin Ohio. and first performed on Monday, April 27 1970, 8:30.p.m. in Warner Concert Hall. The Other Performers for this performance were Fred Holmgren - Trumpet and Donald Miller - Percussion.
The title "trio" only applies to the fact that the work is written for three instruments (see Trio). The work is, however, in three movements and although the work is a "trio of instruments" the major part or role is for the Bass Clarinet. It should be noted, however, that the Trumpet and Percussion parts, although lesser in technical difficulty, include their own challanges and should be considered at least "associate parts" rather than "accompanying parts"
The work is in three movements. It appears that the score of this composition is lost. There is, however, a recording of the first performance and this will be available by January 2006.
Of particular note with this composition, notwithstanding the lost score, it the fact that together with "Prelude, Fantasia, Adagio and Duet for Percussion Solo" and "Allegro, Fantasia and Canon for Cello, Bass Clarinet, Horn and Percussion Solo" the composer has combined them under one title of "Sound Sculpture No. 1".
All three compositions are combined thusly because they all enjoy the same novel and inovative form of notation that the composer calls "Temporal Notation".
