This composition was originally attributed to Henry Purcell (1659 - 1695) but now it is generally accepted that this composition was in fact written by Jeremiah Clarke (1673 - 1707) under the title of The Prince of Denmark's March. As written by Jeremiah Clarke this composition appeared as part of 2 volumes of Harpsichord Solos. This work is rarely heard in its original form but is very popular in many different arrangements. These arrangements are scored for many different instrumental combinations and often include a flamboyant and severely ornamented virtuoso solo trumpet part. It is doubtful, in fact, if the melody itself was possible to be played on the Trumpet of the time (see Natural Trumpet, Clarino Trumpet and Piccolo Trumpet) In which case the grandiose editions we hear today certainly would not be possible at the time of composition. It should be pointed out that this composition is used many times as an appropirate substitute for the (not so appropriate) Bridal Entrance of Richard Wagner (1813 -- 1883) or Bridal Recessional of Felix Mendelssohn (1809 -- 1847) at wedding ceremonies.
In 2003 Kerry R. Scott arranged this work for "English Brass Band". In this arrangement three descants by the composer have been added and significant changes have been made in the harmonizations. It should be noted that all ornamentation has been omitted as the arranger believes that ornamentation is more appropriate when rendering the melody within a Baroque context and inappropriate when new/contemporary harmonizations or instrumentations are used. Although the score is for "English Brass Band" the performance realization of the compostion is done via the computer and MIDI, and with that in mind, for the recording only, certain liberties have been taken with the "English Brass Band" format.
