TOPIC:- The Votive Mass

The Votive Mass is a mass for special intentions (votum). It conforms to the usual format of the Mass (see Topics Roman Catholic Mass and Roman Catholic Mass Format) but is said or sung as a replacement or in addition to the Mass and Office as contained in the Divine Office for that particular day. That is to say on any day of the liturgical year the "Office" for that day should corrispond to the "Mass" for that particular day. When such a Mass does not corrispond to the "Office" it is said to be a Votive Mass. In addition a Votive Mass has a particular "Theme" or "Intention". A list of established Votive Masses can be found at the back of most Missals.
The principle of the Votive Mass is as old as the Mass liturgy itself. In the Middle Ages the Votive Mass was established as a regular feature in the worship community. On any given day the "Official" high Mass was said (or more properly, sung) corrisponding to the "Office" and in addition the priest would also celebrate a private Mass for his particular intention. The latter was said to be a Votive Mass. Today Votive Masses fall into two categories. The first are Masses that are commanded to be said on certain days, and second those which may be celebrated at the priests discretion.
There are a number of examples of the Mass Liturgy within both Kerry R. Scott's music compositions and writings. The most obvious of these is Mass 2100. Mass 2100 is a votive Mass. In addition it is a complete musical setting of the particular "Votive Mass in Thanksgiving" (see Mass in Thanksgiving).
